Winter

In view of venerable shrub pines

Among each frozen fields’ unbroken creases

Beside the bare birch-

In the absence of birds,

Deep calls to deep

Then deep to deeper

Amidst a thunder of silence-

The sacred interrupted

by the crunch of my boots

scarring the untouched snow.
