Apaja’simk – To Return
Submissions open on Submittable Oct 1 through Nov 1, 2021
What does it mean to ‘return’?
We invite poets and photographers to capture the essence of ‘returning’. Think of seasonal wildlife migrations, the return of the self through nature, and of our own inevitable return to the earth when we die.
The Tiny Seed Community is connected and inspired by the Mi’kmaq people and their culture. The Mi’kmaq have lived in what is now called northern Maine and the eastern Canadian Maritimes for over 10,000 years. Funds from this Journal’s submissions fees will be donated to the Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre to build a Mi’kmaq heritage and cultural celebration center.
The Mi’kmaq people’s artwork and crafts were taken to the Smithsonian many generations ago and are now in the process of being returned to their rightful place in Mi’kma’ki. This is a multigenerational return – like the monarch butterfly’s migration.
