Male Gentoo Penguin: Preparation for Incubation

What you need are pebbles—
more—hard to find—
on Antarctica Peninsula—
and a spot for building your nest with
expectant mate. You found the right
smooth stone for wooing her
as you bowed your head
before trumpeting skyward.
She took your token and waited,
bided her time. Now you return
with another gift and then another
in an afternoon start
of perfect pebble offerings.
