Iridescent sprites probe scarlet petals,
whirr above awakening ceanothus
as orange sunrise blossoms.
Tiny scolds brandish needle beaks,
chirp at territorial invaders,
hector trespassing dogs.
I admire white iris unfolding
along picket fence perimeter.
A hummingbird halo orbits my head.
