A wrecked mountain bike
and a shopping trolley marooned in the silt,
Their grey brown hulks poke skyward
waiting for the tide to return and claim them.
The dog busy sniffing the reeds didn’t notice
the long black body slink down the bank
slip silently into the water followed by its tail.
I watch eager to catch another glimpse,
the head surfacing between waves.
Then it was gone.
