Lake Carmi with My Daughter

stunning autumn reflection in vermont s scenic lake
Sitting behind you
in a low-slung kayak
I marvel at
swinging black braids
sliding down your back
shiny in the equinox sun.

Each stroke of dark water
reminds me of the nights
you swore you’d never go back
to fair weather lovers
whose loyalty proved
as shallow as lily pad roots.

Now, at the turning of our seasons together
as our lives intwine intertwine again
anchored in aging love, we turn as one
for the deepest waters of Lake Carmi.
