Like Water

rippling seawater reflecting pink evening sky
Come to me like gently, like water
that I may surrender weightless
to your ultimate embrace

When you are ready, come when I am floating
arms by my sides, palms upturned, body
yielding, gently supported by your infinite density

Fill my ears first, muffle the din
of children’s voices, the bubbling sounds
of irrepressible life
Softly fill the spaces that surround unseeing eyes
Extinguish the senses one by one
as if blowing out the candles
one by one, as I prepare for sleep

Allow me to return to the warm waters
where I floated weightless and unaware
before my birth, oblivious to the world
and all its beauty and all its pain

Let me curl into the position of inception
weightless and empty
to surrender, descend deeper
deeper to that place where the only sound
the first sound, the final sound
is the beating of one solitary heart

Death, come to me gently, like water
