–‘river’ in Cherokee

i long to commute
by you, the
original highway
kayaking to work
the only traffic
osprey, kingfisher
eagles overlooking
this heron rookery
and fish jump-twisting
scales glimmering still
in my eyes as i arrive
and, when on land,
treading lightly
here

Lanette Smith

Lanette loves to be near, in, on, or around water. From sailing lessons to stand up paddle boarding, water is where she feels most at home. A former lifeguard, she has kayaked the Rogue as well as the Wilamette River from the Mackenzie to the Columbia in her boat dubbed “the U.S.S. Joy”.
