where the woods whispered solace
from a splintering marriage.
Ponderosas and Douglas Firs,
indifferent to tensions over their roots—
too many abandoned nests
for them to care.
Our entangled life choking
in thick underbrush
of his body’s betrayals.
He made a trail,
dragged a cement boulder
behind his ATV—
a peace offering in dirt
—Here, he said, for you
to walk in circles, build
a spiderweb.
When all I wanted
was a path,
to lead me back
to him.
