Unplanned Paths

My journey to Africa began on YouTube, with
an image of a black leopard named Spirit.

I watched a video about him ten times at least,
his sleek silhouette imbedded in my psyche.

Amazed at his story of transformation from a snarling
beast to a gentle soul after being rescued,

I forgot about Spirit until years later I
stood before him in the Big Cat Sanctuary

and remembered the video, remembered also my
daughter’s obsessive viewing of a gymnast who

won the world record for backflips, and years later
found this girl would be her college roommate.

Some call it manifesting, magnetizing, visualizing,
or law of attraction, but I call it mystery.
