Outside in the predawn darkness
Two owls, great horned, are hooting
in close conversation
having finished hunting, they traveled
a familiar flightpath to our neighborhood
and turn themselves to another
sort of hunger, of coursing blood
and ancient sustaining need
and whatever lives in an owl's heart
