Lilacs, With Love

close photo of purple petaled flower during daytime

I fill your eyes first.
Then your nose.
Last, your arms.

You run with me.

Down the street
Past the houses
Through the gate
Up the steps
To her.

“I brought you spring!” you cry.
She rises,

To you.
Up she looks
Through the wrinkles
Past the loneliness
Down the porch.

I fill her eyes first.
Then her nose.
Then her arms.
Last, her heart,
And cheeks run with tears
As she cradles me,
Her gift from you.

I am a former K-12 educator with a passion for poetry, picture books, and children’s literature. I hold a Master’s degree in English from the University of St. Thomas, Minnesota and belong to the Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. My writing is inspired by my love for nature and a childhood spent frolicking in the woods of the Chippewa National Forest.
