The Waters of Life

photo of river with calm waters
I go to lakes and streams
for different reasons.
Lakes show what is always
present reflected on the water,
contained by a shoreline,
the paradox of forever caught
in here and now
like the sacred
in the profane.
I go to streams to see the flow of time
forever moving with a sense
of what I’m watching
is passing me by
like the profane
in the sacred.
I fish them both. I seek what is below
the surface, the depths of time
and eternity, what I may catch,
what may catch me.
