Lay Lines

river in forest
bewildered we stood
in the wilderness
each poem a held breath
like love or silence
there were no roads

we hated the word purpose
we threw our heads back
defiantly
the white of our eyes
nervous as horses

but we felt the map
in our blood like
birds forced to move
across a magnetic world
