A River Sheds its Skin

purple flowers on riverside
A winter river sheds its skin
like a shark loses its teeth.

Frost-bites its own tongue,
nipping Coyote's nose as he drinks from
the banks and gnaws the
four bony ankles of Doe,
whose legs traverse
the inky vein in the earth.

Rushes earthwards like
an open valve amongst
the blazing, bloody dogwood;
the steady heart of a dormant world
announces itself--
alive, alive, alive
